Services

9/24: I currently have Monday virtual appts available.

My role as a therapist is to help you examine and work through your feelings in order to remove emotional weight and expand your tolerance for discomfort in a supportive and safe environment. Through our work together you will develop a higher tolerance for stress, anxiety, shifts in mood, and the unexpected challenges of life.

My approach is both psychodynamic and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)-oriented with aspects of mindfulness.  Psychodynamic therapy is a deeper approach that will enable us to explore the underlying causes for the challenges you are experiencing so that you can develop a better understanding of why you have been struggling and how to reduce the recurrence of unhelpful patterns.  CBT is used to uncover unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors and to replace them with healthier coping skills. I am a strong proponent of mindfulness, a mental state of focusing one’s awareness to the current moment, and use certain exercises with those who seek to remove distractors and/or anxious thoughts and feel more present. In our work together we will build a toolbox of techniques that you can use in your daily life to calm down, distract yourself from negative thought patterns, think positively, and address the challenges you may be facing.  This three-pronged approach will help you to reduce discomfort and negative thinking and to develop a better understanding of yourself.

My clients have shared that they have found me to be straightforward, empathetic and encouraging, and to have a sense of humor.  I play an active role in sessions but allow space for a client to process his/her/their feelings. I often tell clients that while they will always know themselves best, I am here to help them understand their thought patterns and to act as a guide.

I welcome and provide a safe space for individuals from diverse backgrounds, including gender, religion, ethnicity, nationality, and sexuality, and have a particular interest in working with expectant and new parents as well as members of the LGBTQ community.  I provide individual and couples therapy to adults 18+ and treat a wide range of issues, including but not limited to:

  • Parenting

  • Anxiety (including OCD and panic issues)

  • Pregnancy and post partum

  • Intimate relationships

  • Adjustments (post college, marriage, parenthood, relocation)

  • Identity

  • Gender and sexuality

  • Grief and loss

  • Family conflict

  • Depression

My Training

I received my Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Kenyon College and my Masters of Science in Social Work from Columbia University.  During my masters training I completed an internship at The Renfrew Center of New York and continued to work for Renfrew in Manhattan for the following four years.  At Renfrew, I provided individual, couples, family, multi-family, meal support, and group therapy to women struggling with eating disorders and their loved ones.

Following my tenure at Renfrew I joined The George Washington University's (GWU) Mental Health Services team as both a Staff Clinician and their first Eating Disorder Services Coordinator.  At GWU I created guidelines to care for students with body image and eating concerns and served the University's greater population helping students dealing with adjustment concerns, anxiety and depression, traumatic experiences, grief and loss, relationship issues, identity issues, and countless other concerns. Additionally I served on several mental health panels; taught a Peer Education course in the Psychology Department; supervised social work students, doctoral interns, and post-doctoral fellows in both individual and group modalities; provided a seminar for doctoral and social work students; and guest lectured for Exercise Science classes in the Milkin School of Public Health.

I have been in private practice since 2016 and am licensed in D.C.; Maryland, and Virginia.  In 2017 I completed post-graduate training in psychodynamic psychotherapy at The Washington School of Psychiatry's Clinical Program on Psychotherapy Practice, specializing in individual and couples therapy. In 2019 I completed the PSI and 2020 Mom Professional Maternal Mental Health Certificate Training.

Insurance/Fees

I am an out-of-network provider which means that I am not a listed provider with any insurance company. However, most of my clients receive reimbursement for our sessions from their insurance companies. Typically, a substantial portion of my fee (between 50%-80%) is covered by insurance, once a deductible has been met.

If you do not know your insurance benefits I strongly suggest that you contact your insurance company and inquire about your benefits for an "out-of-network clinical social worker." If we decide to work together I will provide you with a descriptive bill (“superbill”) for services each month that you can submit to your insurance company as well as a Good Faith Estimate of what your services may cost. My current fee for a 45 minute individual therapy session is $235.
